Bamboo Railing and Skirting Care and Maintenance
Railings and skirting are more vulnerable to weathering than other parts of the house. On the windward sides of the house they are impacted by driving rain. On the sun sides of the house they are impacted by angular sun exposure.
Bamboo railings and skirting are optional parts. Because of potential damage from weather exposure, requiring regular additional owner care and maintenance, bamboo railings and skirting are not covered by bamboo house warranties.
Bamboo railings must be covered by a minimum 2' porch overhang to prevent direct weathering damage by sun and rain.
Purchaser should inspect railings after arrival and installation. Railing joints can be opened in shipment. Caulk any joints in railings and any cracks. Use exterior door and window caulk with 50 year guarantee. All weatherproofing details must be completed in a timely manner including all caulking and proper bolt cover installation.
Railings are shipped from the factory with three coats of Cetol, exterior finish. One final coat can be applied within thirty (30) days of assembly completion. This will add extra protection.
Purchaser should add one coat of Cetol with mildicide additive to exterior railings, skirting and weather exposed areas. Any additional Cetol purchased locally (Log & Siding type) should have mildicide added to it. We recommend M1, which is 1 package per gallon of Cetol.
Purchaser should inspect railings, at least once each year, for effects of weathering from sun and rain on railing joints, all bamboo connections and bamboo surfaces, and reapply with exterior door and window caulk with 50 year guarantee, and Cetol with mildicide as necessary.
